When we examine the Quran, we notice the terms Makki and Madani appear in the upper corner of each chapter. What do these terms signify? The Quran is organized not in chronological order but rather from the longest to the shortest chapters, and it is categorized into two types of surahs: Meccan (Makki) and Medinan (Madani). The revelations received by Prophet Muhammad during his time in Medina are referred to as Medinan surahs. These surahs consist of 28 chapters and focus on the principles of Sharia law, civil regulations, and the majority of verses concerning obligatory duties and Islamic legislation. Medinan surahs also address the concept of Jihad and include directives related to it. Additionally, they mention Jews, Christians, and hypocrites. The verses in these surahs tend to be longer than those in the Meccan surahs and often begin with the phrase “O you who believe…,” which calls upon the faithful to engage in Jihad.
